If you’ve ever topped up your MTN line only to watch your airtime balance shrink mysteriously, then you really need to read this post till the end to find out why and what you can do to fix the issue.

Nigerians across different states have been reporting unexplained airtime deductions for months. Some notice it after a short call. Others see balance drops overnight without using data, SMS or call minutes. So what’s really going on?

To understand this, we need to look at what MTN and industry analysts say about recurring deductions and the possible causes behind them.

First, it’s important to separate legitimate charges from suspicious ones. When you buy airtime, MTN may deduct a small amount for service charges, data auto-renewals, subscription bundles you opted into, or value-added services that periodically renew. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), all telecom operators are permitted to charge for services and bundles the user explicitly subscribes to. That means if you accepted a data or content bundle (like news alerts, sports updates, daily jokes or premium SMS), the system may auto-renew it and deduct airtime regularly.

But many users insist they never signed up for such services. In response to such reports, investigations by telecom consumer forums frequently reveal that users inadvertently opted into third-party services or bundles when responding to prompts during app usage or USSD sessions. These services are often marketed via shortcodes or pop-up ads and may require only a single confirmation click to activate. Once active, they can renew automatically until canceled.

Another factor is MTN’s airtime recharge platform behavior. When you reload, your balance can show the gross amount first, then shift after a few minutes as system fees settle. Some users think airtime is disappearing because the initial displayed balance hasn’t yet reflected service charges or system reconciliations. It is similar to how bank apps sometimes take a moment to match your real available balance after a transaction.

In certain cases, what looks like disappearing airtime is actually airtime being used for data or value-added service charges that run quietly in the background. On Android phones especially, background apps may automatically connect to the internet using carrier data if Wi-Fi is unstable, and that can slowly eat away airtime if your data bundle isn’t active. An analysis of user complaints on forums like Nairaland and Reddit shows that many of these disappearances happen when users are on the move, switching between mobile networks and background app updates kick in.

There’s also the issue of system timing and refresh rates. Airtime usage isn’t always displayed in real time. If you make back-to-back calls, the displayed airtime might not reflect the exact deduction until a few minutes later when MTN’s billing system reconciles usage logs. This delay can make it seem like airtime vanished without explanation.

So what can you do about it?

The first step is to check your subscriptions. You can dial *123# or use the MyMTN app to review active bundles and services. Look for anything you don’t recognize — even if a service was added weeks ago, it may still be renewing and deducting airtime regularly. Cancelling those can stop ongoing deductions.

Next, be cautious when responding to prompts in USSD menus or pop-ups that offer “free” or “discounted” services. Many times these come bundled with recurring charges. If you’re unsure, decline and research before confirming.

Another useful tactic is to monitor your data usage settings. Make sure your mobile data isn’t enabled when you’re on Wi-Fi only. This reduces unintentional airtime data spending that happens when apps auto-update or sync in the background.

If you suspect your airtime is still slipping away, it’s worth checking your call and data usage logs in the MyMTN app or via the *123*10# balance check codes. These can show detailed usage breakdowns, helping you isolate where airtime is going.

In persistent cases where the behavior seems truly unexplained, contacting MTN customer care directly through the app or their support line can sometimes reveal billing issues or clarify adjustments that aren’t obvious in your activity logs. Keep screenshots, dates and approximate times handy when you reach out — it helps support agents investigate faster.

At the end of the day, airtime disappearing isn’t always a scam or error. Many times it’s associated with underlying services, automatic renewals, background data use or billing timing differences. But being aware of what services are active, controlling how and when data is used, and regularly reviewing your balance and subscriptions can give you much better visibility over where your airtime is going.
