WhatsApp has started rolling out a green dot indicator on Android that shows when a contact is currently online. The new visual marker replaces the text based status label that previously appeared in the chat info screen.
Here is what the update actually changes.
What The Green Dot Does
Spotted in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.24.5 for Android, the green dot appears directly on a contact’s profile picture inside the chat info screen. Instead of reading a text line that says someone is online, users now see a small green circle on their profile photo, making it faster to check availability at a glance.

The change is part of a broader move by Meta to make WhatsApp feel more visually intuitive rather than relying on written status updates.
Your Privacy Settings Still Apply
Contacts who have hidden their last seen or online status will not appear with a green dot. This means existing privacy controls are fully preserved. If you have already turned off your online visibility for certain contacts, this update does not change that.
Where The Green Dot Currently Appears
For now, the green dot is limited specifically to the chat info screen. It is not yet visible in the main chat list or inside an open conversation. WhatsApp already shows green dots in some group headers and individual chats to indicate active participants, so this update builds on that existing system rather than replacing it entirely.
A Bigger Online Contacts Feature Is Coming
This rollout appears to be a preview of something larger. WhatsApp is also testing a feature that pools all online contacts into a single list, separate from individual chats. According to reports, this new list would show favourite contacts at the top, followed by those currently online, and then contacts who were recently active.
WhatsApp plans to use the same green dot styling within that upcoming hub once it launches, which is why the current chat info screen update matters. It signals the direction the design is heading.
Why WhatsApp Is Doing This
WhatsApp has over 3 billion users worldwide, and for most of its history, it has functioned as a private messaging tool rather than a social platform. Apps like Telegram have offered online contact lists with custom filters for years, while Signal keeps things simple with chat specific indicators only. Facebook Messenger has an “Active” tab but includes more clutter around it.
So by introducing the green dot and the upcoming online contacts hub, WhatsApp is positioning itself to feel more like a real time communication platform instead of just a messaging app.
No Official Release Date Yet
WhatsApp has not announced a timeline for a stable, public release. The feature is currently limited to a small group of Android beta testers. Tests have also been spotted on iOS, suggesting a cross platform rollout will likely follow once Android testing is complete.
Based on how WhatsApp typically handles beta features, wider rollout to more testers and eventually the general public could take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.
What This Means For You as a User
For people who manage large group chats or rely on WhatsApp for quick back and forth communication, seeing who is online at a glance could reduce the back and forth of sending a message and waiting to see if someone responds. Casual users who do not need real time availability information may not notice much difference in their daily use.
Either way, the update reflects WhatsApp’s gradual shift toward a more visually driven, presence aware app, while keeping existing privacy choices intact for those who prefer to stay invisible.
